You Can Build Strong Teeth and Bones

Did you know you can strengthen your teeth and bones? They’re alive, so that means we can strengthen and regenerate this important foundation that holds up our bodies. It’s what we rely on to move, walk and chew. We need strong bones and teeth to get through of life. And it’s especially important as we age to maintain our bones and teeth.

Our bones are like a bank account. When we’re young, new “deposits” are added faster than is removed. In our 20s, “withdrawals” begin to exceed “deposits,” which can be prevented by getting enough calcium, Vitamin D and exercise. Even though our bones break down and rebuilds naturally, as we age, we need a little extra help with the rebuilding process within our bones. We can’t change the fact that our bodies age, but we can support and strengthen it.

Our teeth have enamel, the outer covering which protects the inner more fragile dentin and pulp. Enamel is over 95% mineral and it’s important in protecting us against tooth decay.It’s comprised of mostly calcium hydroxyapatite, which is a combination of calcium and phosphorus. To prevent enamel from wear and tear, adequate amounts of calcium and magnesium are needed. Dentin is important as it protects the core of our tooth, the dental pulp. Dentin, the layer underneath enamel, is made of 70% mineral, mostly calcium hydroxyapatite, 20% collagen and 10% water.

Since the enamel protects our teeth, it’s important to strengthen it with calcium and phosphorous, using bioavailable nutrients. The good news is you can strengthen brittle teeth and bones from the inside.

Exercise

Weight bearing exercise like walking, and resistance, such as lifting weights can help slow down bone loss or the “withdrawals” that happen when we get older.Sedentary people lose more calcium.

Don’t Smoke and Keep Alcohol Intake Low

Smoking can increase bone loss, while alcohol consumption can weaken bones, by reducing the body’s ability to make new bone. More than one drink a day for women and two drinks for men can speed up bone loss.

Remember Your “Greens and Beans”

Getting enough protein is important as it helps build bone. Some of the most healthful calcium comes from legumes and green leafy vegetables. So eating as much broccoli, collard greens, kale, mustard greens and other vegetables will help your calcium “deposits.” Spinach and Swiss chard are exceptions in that they hold onto calcium more. When it comes to the discussion about calcium, beans may not be the first thing you think of, but the humble bean is loaded with calcium. That includes tofu and chickpeas, which also have magnesium, a mineral the body needs with calcium to build bone.

Get Vitamin D from the Sun

Since Vitamin D helps control your body’s usage of calcium, about 15 to 20 minutes a day in the sun produces the Vitamin D you need. But it’s always best to take a Vitamin D supplement with Vitamin K to ensure absorption.

Reduce Excess Sodium Intake

Since calcium in bones can dissolve into the bloodstream and pass through the kidneys into your urine, excess salt in your food can increase calcium loss through the kidneys. Reducing excess salt intake, such as from canned foods and salty snacks, can help your bones hold onto calcium better.

Milk Isn’t Always the Answer

We’ve always been told to drink milk for healthy bones. But in a 12-year study at Harvard with 78,000 women, those who drank milk three times a day broke more bones than women who rarely drank milk. There was a similar study in Australia for both men and women, which showed those with the highest consumption of dairy had double the risk of hip fractures. These studies show we do need calcium, but we need a way to keep it in our bones and not have the increased calcium “withdrawals” that happen.

Drink Green Tea

Continuing research shows that green tea can strengthen bones and may help prevent osteoporosis. In a 2017 study, postmenopausal women who were given green tea had noticeable improvement in their bone health.

Decrease Sugar

While it’s the month of Halloween, try to reduce your sugar intake. Studies show that sugar can skew the body’s mineral balance and increase bone depletion.
